The Power of Color Grading
Color grading log footage is an essential skill for any filmmaker or video editor and understanding the importance enhances the outcome. At Triscari, this process of Color Grading is important to our video production team, and is a way to promise your organization’s videos look their very best!
What is Log Footage?
Log footage, short for logarithmic footage, is a type of video recording format that captures a wide dynamic range of light in an image. Unlike standard footage, which is often contrasty and saturated, log footage appears flat and desaturated straight out of the camera. This might seem unappealing at first glance, but it’s actually a preference for filmmakers. The flat profile preserves more detail in the shadows and highlights, offering greater flexibility in post-production to shape the final look of the footage.
What is the Purpose of Color Grading?
Color grading allows the filmmaker to achieve a specific aesthetic or mood. Want a dramatic scene? Classic film look? Bright and Happy? Dark and grim? Color grading can help achieve these types of scenes and more.
How Do We Achieve This? LUTs!
We have custom LUTs (Look-Up Tables) that give our footage a specific look. Essentially, a LUT is a pre-defined set of instructions that tells your editing software how to map one set of colors to another.
